Actor Kamal Haasan’s comment that “Kannada was born from Tamil” has sparked a huge controversy in Karnataka. Many Kannada organizations and political parties have condemned this, demanded an apology, and even demanded a ban on the film ‘Tak Life’. Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar, who had been silent on the issue, has now spoken out.
Explaining Kamal’s speech in Kerala yesterday, Kamal Haasan said, “I spoke like that out of love. Love never apologizes. The debate on language should be left to historians and linguists. Politicians, including me, are unfit to talk about the history of language.” In this situation, Sivarajkumar broke his silence at the audio launch of a Kannada film held in Bengaluru.
In his speech, Shiva Rajkumar expressed his immense respect and love for Kamal Haasan. “Kamal sir always speaks highly of Kannada. He also expresses great admiration for Bengaluru. I have been a huge fan of Kamal sir for many years. Some people ask, ‘How can I be a fan of Kamal Haasan more than your father?’ My father is part of my family. But Kamal sir is different. He is a real inspiration to me,” he said with emotion.
He also said, “He understands exactly what the audience needs and always delivers it. It is a matter of pride for all of us that he invited me as the chief guest for his event. He was with us yesterday. If anyone had any grievances, they could have asked him directly, but no one did,” Kamal replied on behalf of the actor.
Shiva Rajkumar delivered a sharp message about his deep attachment to the Kannada language. “Love for Kannada should not be only when there is trouble. It should be from the heart, always constant. Our commitment to Kannada should be lifelong. If necessary, I am ready to fight for Kannada—even to give my life for Kannada. Just praising Kannada in front of the cameras is not enough. Actions are more important than words. What have you done for Kannada cinema? Have you given opportunities to newcomers? If we really want Kannada to grow, it is our duty to support it in every way,” he said with emotion.
Finally, he concluded his speech by saying, “Don’t misunderstand why I am saying this. Ask your conscience—am I right or wrong? The answer will be clear. I need not comment further on the controversies that have arisen against Kamal sir—he has already contributed a lot to Kannada cinema.”
This frank speech by Shiva Rajkumar is expected to have a huge impact on the Kannada film industry and political circles.
